Kings Beach Roundabout Art: “Da O Wa Ga” replaces “Swimming With Friends” in Roundabouts As “Friends” Finds New Local Home

11/6/2015

Comments

“Swimming With Friends,” a kinetic sculpture proposed by David Boyer to be placed in one of the new Kings Beach Roundabouts, has been replaced with “Da O Wa Ga,” a sculpture proposed by Brett Moten of Infinity Forge.
The “Friends” piece was selected by the community at a public meeting last March (2015), but because of its kinetic elements, Caltrans cannot have it in the public roadway. TPA is finalizing the details of the placement of “Swimming With Friends” on private property.

“Da O Wa Ga” came in third place in that public vote, just seven votes behind “Friends“ (out of 858 total votes cast). “Leaf Sails” by Troy Corliss, the piece selected for the other roundabout, remains planned for installation. “Da O Wa Ga” and “Leaf Sails” will undergo engineering review before final approval is given by Caltrans.

Although it is disappointing to TPA to make a shift in plans, everyone is well pleased that “Swimming With Friends,” will be placed on private property, including artist David Boyer. Notes TPA Executive Committee member Steve Miller, “In the long run, North Lake Tahoe will benefit by having three pieces of public art instead of two, all of them chosen by community vote!”

The Caltrans process, which until recently was halted statewide by the agency for policy updates, is anticipated to take several months. TPA plans to update the community through its website and facebook page. Any inquiries may be sent to tahoepublicart@gmail.com.

Truckee River Pipe Art Competition Winner

We’re delighted to announce the winner of the Truckee River Pipe Art competition: Stephane Cellier of Virginia City! His proposal, to create an “aquarium tube” on the pipe was well received by both the first jury and the TCPUD Board of Directors, which served as the second jury.

The decision was not an easy one: there were several excellent proposals received and the jurors all deliberated long and hard about it. Many wished there could be more than one pipe project, to use more of the fantastic proposals!

The pipe is scheduled to be installed sometime in October 2015: stay tuned for updates on the official unveiling!

Tahoe Public Art thanks the Tahoe City Public Utility District for the opportunity to partner with them on this fantastic project!

The Community Votes!

3/20/2015

Comments

Last night, March 19, 2015, more than 425 voters turned out to vote for the two Kings Beach Roundabout Art pieces! Thank you everyone who came out to choose the art!  The vote was harrowing-ly close, we were stunned to find.

The top two, therefore the winners to go into the roundabouts, are:

Picture
"Swimming with Friends" by David Boyer of Reno, NV
Congratulations to Troy and David and all finalists--Roger Berry (KBR 3), Brett Moten (KBR 36) and Robert Stokes (KBR 14): people really appreciated your beautiful visions and were quite enthusiastic! It is fair to say the competition last night was fierce.

Stay tuned: the next step will be CalTrans approval: they are the final authority on artwork on state roadways. This will be a matter of months, not weeks, so please bear with us as we move forward and check this website for updates.

Art Goes Here
Last November, Tahoe Public Art put out a call to artists for art in the two new Kings Beach roundabouts. 38 artist proposals were received.  Jury #1 selected 14 semi-finalists; Jury #2 narrowed that down to five finalists. The community is Jury #3, and will vote for the two winners at a Community Meeting on Thursday, March 19, 5:30-7:30pm at the North Tahoe Event Center.

The two winners will be reviewed and approved by CalTrans before they are installed!

Don’t miss this opportunity to help decide on the permanent art in the Kings Beach roundabouts.

NEW! Call to Artists!

11/21/2014

Call Summary

We are inviting proposals for Kings Beach Roundabout Art, a permanent public art installation to be placed on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe in each of two traffic roundabouts in Kings Beach, CA. The roadway is North Lake Boulevard (which is also CA State Highway 28), the main thoroughfare. There are two roundabouts, and two (2) separate artist’s proposals will be chosen, one for each roundabout.

This project is commissioned by Tahoe Public Art, a formal consortium of North Tahoe Arts, North Tahoe Business Association and Tahoe City Downtown Association. This is a Request For Proposal (RFP) process and proposals must be postmarked no later than January 25, 2015.

There will be three rounds of selection: the first two by juries and the final selection by the community-at-large. The first jury will sit February 15, 2015; the second jury will sit March 12, 2015 and the final selection will be made on March 19, 2015. The installation must be in place by September 26, 2015 and the unveiling will be held on September 27, 2015, as the crowning jewel celebration of North Lake Tahoe’s Art Month.

The artist’s honorarium will not exceed $125,000 per roundabout. This includes all labor, transportation, materials, and installation costs.

There is no restriction on artists’ eligibility (beyond the project’s required parameters stated below); however, no additional funding for travel costs is available.
